Back in Glasgow now and back to work. My last day in Paris started wonderfully with Jean Paul Knott's effortlessly chic presentation over a platter of macarons, and reached a colourful climax with Issey Miyake's techno take on tartan and Scottish/Irish music. It felt so fabulous finally attending a show hosted in the Tuileries and getting to watch the streetstylers at work picking out their victims from the queues. Issey's PR team had seated everybody by region, so I got to catch up with lots of Londoners while I was there. The menswear shows are almost never held in the Tuileries, and the last time I went to a show in the Louvre was four years ago, so it was quite an experience.
Another experience, however less pleasant, was the return trip to Scotland. It amazes me that Charles de Gaulle, the principal international airport in Paris, does not have a dedicated high-speed train line to the city centre. Instead you either have to fight through the city's torturous traffic jams in a taxi or coach, or ride the regional RER train. Since the RER is the fastest and most reliable route, that's what we opted for – never again! Running through what I can only imagine are the renowned slums surrounding the city's périphérique, the other passengers on the train were pretty menacing. We had a group of guys sitting behind us discussing the drugs they were selling, a homeless man who urinated on himself, and then an altercation between the dealers and the homeless... Absolutely terrifying. There are lots of areas of London where you don't necessarily feel safe, but tourists aren't normally forced to go through them to get in and out of the city. Reaching the airport should have been a relief, but we were faced with Air France's disorganised check-in, horrendous queues at baggage drop and then the most bizarre security set-up I've ever seen. Arrived two hours in advance of our flight but still only just made it in time!
