Greek-born, Rhode Island- and CSM-educated Mary Katrantzou kicked off her fashion career with her AW 09/10 collection straight out of university, holding her show in the BFC tents with Mark Fast. Her focus was the perfume bottle - for years, based on the form of a woman's body, now projected back onto the figures of the models (including a pre-baby Jourdan Dunn) via a series of shift dresses. This was complimented by a killer jewellery range, produced back in Greece in her mother's furniture factory:
The collection was a hit with the press and buyers alike (I have seen several whilst browsing Harvey Nichols), but some doubted this print-specialist could become a fully-fledged designer. However, her SS10 collection pushed the boundaries of printing techniques (reminiscent of London textiles masters Basso&Brooke), whilst expanding her repertoire of shapes. The glass perfumes bottles in vibrant colours were twisted and distorted into almost organic shapes, that burst out of a series of dresses, trousers, jackets and oversized collars. And of course, the blown-glass jewellery was still oversized, and gorgeous:
Mary, we look forward to what you have in store for us on the 20th of Feb! Photos from Style.com
